LyricsSomeone take my heart away
When the skies are gray, Will these things ever pass? Run on, will you run away, Do you ever stay? Sometimes trees grow too fast. I used to think that I didn't have long, Now I know I was wrong. Bound in the words of an unwritten song That we knew all along. Somewhere, Can I climb your stare? I wish that I was there, But it's all about timing, You can go wherever you dare, No one said life was fair, And the whole world's watching. I used to think that I didn't have long, Now I know I was wrong. Bound in the words of an unwritten song That we knew all along. Destiny, Just let it be, Destiny, Nothing's certain, Predetermined destiny. [6x] |
Explanation One of the main themes evident in The Nun's Priest's Tale, is the concept of a predetermined destiny - which easily relates to the song, being that it's the title.
Predetermination is the notion that every occurrence is caused, not by happenings immediately prior to, but by a chain of events that is somehow already established in advance. It promotes the idea that any of our actions cannot interfere with the outcomes which have already been set out for us. This was a strict belief of many Churches and religious groups, who believed God had already chosen a "path" for each and every one of us. The ideology that everything happens for a reason and we must accept it as his will. In The Nun's Priest's Tale, predetermination is mentioned several times. Firstly, when Chaunticleer experiences his dream, he believes it to be a message from a higher power warning him of his fate - death at the hands of a "hound-like beast." And though he forgets about it, through Pertelote's chiding, the prophecy does still come somewhat true. There is a slight difference to the perspective on predetermination between the two pieces. The song seems to lean toward accepting destiny for what it is and learning how to live through it. However, while the poem suggests the validity of predetermined fate, it also dismisses it and later demonstrates how things don't have to turn out exactly the way they were originally meant to. Chaunticleer was taken away in the jaws of the fox, but he wasn't killed, due to his own cleverness. |
